Between the Sheets

No, I’m not being flip. Nor am I making a rather obvious invitation. Believe it or not that is actually the name of today’s classic cocktail. And before you ask, no, I didn’t make it up. Someone much older than me, someone who’s probably no longer among the living, has that claim to fame. But since it is such a wonderful double entendre, I thought it would be the perfect cocktail for this heart-shaped holiday.

I know a more appropriate cocktail for today’s festivities might be the Cosmopolitan, Pink Lady or even the Sea Breeze because they’re pink. But who could pass up a name like this? Besides, those cocktails are better if you’re planning a night of just drinks and dessert because they’re sweet and don’t pack too much of a punch. This cocktail on the other hand, has a lot more punch and so is the perfect complement to a nice romantic dinner.

That punch comes from the fact that unlike those other cocktails, this one is all alcohol. That’s right there aren’t any mixers and barely any fruit juices. It’s a serious cocktail which makes it the ideal choice for a man or a woman on this romantic evening.

Most likely created in the early 30’s at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, this cocktail bares a strong resemblance to the Sidecar which was also believed to be created at Harry’s Bar, only several years earlier. Both are part of the sour cocktail repertoire and both are delicious options for a night in. But be warned, more than one of these drinks and you could easily find yourself Between the Sheets.
