September Morn Cocktail
Well, we’ve finally hit September. As I mentioned earlier this week, that means the kids are finally in school and the leaves are starting to fall… or they should be. While it is September, autumn doesn’t officially start until September 22nd, which means leaves have yet to fall from their trees, and it’s still in the 80’s and 90’s outside. There is good news, though: all this warm weather means there’s still plenty of time to eat and drink like it’s summer, which means there’s still plenty of time for a classic, rum cocktail.
While it’s true that I tend to drink vodka and gin during the warmer, summer months, I also enjoy a good rum cocktail. Sure, they’re usually tiki cocktails filled with tropical juices and simple syrups, but every so often, a drink that’s simply rum, lime juice and egg whites is just what a Friday afternoon calls for.
If you like rum, you’re going to like this drink, especially if you use an aged rum that has a little bit of spice to it. I used my Zaya 12 year. It’s sweet and spicy and wonderful all on its own. But when blended with lime juice, grenadine and egg whites, it makes one hell of a cocktail. A cocktail worthy of its name. Yes, I’m making a drink called a September Morn, and while it probably isn’t the best idea to imbibe this tipple before noon, anytime after that is absolutely okay.
Coming from my 1935 Old Mr. Boston guide, this drink is pretty much a sour with some bite thanks to the spicy, barrel-aged rum. It’s a cocktail that would be perfect for sipping on a lazy afternoon snuggled up with a good book. Or binge-watching your favorite dark and twisty TV show after hours. (My preference right now is The Sinner, which if you aren’t watching, you need to jump on that bandwagon stat.) In short, this classic cocktail should be on the top of your autumn drink list… it is September after all.
