Los Angeles Cocktail
The Super Bowl is only two weeks away, and while you may have your food all planned out, have you thought about what drinks you’re serving? Beer and cider are the obvious choices, but who says you have to stop there? Why not serve a cocktail as well? Since I love a good drink (way more than beer) I did some research and discovered there are two that are perfect for the February match up: one from Los Angeles and one from Boston.
Both drinks are from my Old Mr. Boston Bartender’s Guide. I said they were from opposite sides of the country and I wasn’t kidding. One’s called the Los Angeles Cocktail and the other’s the Boston Cooler. Since the two teams playing in the Super Bowl are the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots, I thought what better way to celebrate the big game than with these two retro drinks?
Since I’m a Boston fan, I thought I’d bring you the L.A. cocktail this week and the Boston one next week. They’re both great, but they’re completely different. The Los Angeles Cocktail is a dainty, bright yellow drink, served up in a cocktail glass. But while it may look pretty and sweet, it’s actually packs a punch. Made up of whiskey and vermouth, this drink will keep you going even when your team is down. (Don’t get mad, you knew I was a Pats fan.)
While I love a good whiskey cocktail, my favorite thing about this drink is the egg. I know, I know… the dreaded raw egg. I’ve used it before and it always surprises me how much people recoil when they hear about it. They’re afraid they’ll get sick. But the odds of getting sick from a little raw egg are pretty slim. See, using the whole egg not only adds a creamy, silkiness to the cocktail, it adds a beautiful layer of froth to the drink. A froth that not only tastes great, but elevates it to a whole other level. That egg makes the drink extra special, which is fitting since this game itself is extra special, too.
