Coquito

The holidays are right around the corner. First comes Hanukkah and then Christmas. With the holidays overlapping this year, there are plenty of chances to indulge in both fancy confections and cocktails. While I won’t turn down the sweets, you all know if it comes down to choosing between the two, I’ll go with the cocktail every time. My favorite holiday cocktail is Eggnog, hands down. I love it so much, I make it at least three times between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.

But this year, I discovered something different. This year, I discovered a classic cocktail that tastes just like my favorite Christmas nog, with one big difference: there isn’t one single egg in the whole batch. Instead of eggs, the main ingredient is coconut. That’s right, this drink is made up of coconut in all its forms, from coconut milk to coconut cream to shredded coconut. Of course there’s also plenty of spices and rum. Lots and lots of rum.

Similar to the tropical Sky Juice, this drink was also born on a tropical island in the Atlantic. Where Sky Juice was created in the Bahamas, the Coquito, which means little coconut, was created in Puerto Rico. Although no one knows exactly where or when the drink was created, it’s one of those drinks that have been passed down through the ages. It’s for that reason there are several different recipes. Some have rum-soaked raisins, some have shredded coconut, but all of them have coconut cream, sweetened condense milk and rum. Add some cinnamon and nut meg and you have a wonderful cool cocktail that’s sweet, creamy deliciousness, and a nice alternative to egg nog. But don’t take my word for it, mix up a batch this Christmas and see for yourself.
