S’all Good, Man

PLEASE NOTE – The following post/recipe contains spoilers for Better Call Saul. So, if you’re not caught up on the final season, please come back once you are.

If you’re a Better Call Saul fan, you know that this Monday is the series finale. At long last, after years of meth and money, cartels and lawsuits the show is coming to an end. We finally know that Kim didn’t die, but Howard, Lalo and Nacho did. We saw how Jimmy McGill turned into Saul Goodman: he simply converted his favorite catch phrase. We know that ever since Breaking Bad, he’s been living out a humdrum life in Omaha… until he was recognized by Jeff, and now, it appears, is back to his old ways.  So, only one question remains: how will it all end for Saul?

Will he escape with plenty of money from his department store thefts or will Marion, Jeff’s wheelchair-bound mother, played masterfully by Carol Burnett, turn him in? And of course there’s that 3 second clip we saw for the final episode with Gene’s car crashed off the side of the road. Only the creators, the cast and anyone involved with the show knows what will happen. But for those of us who have been waiting with baited breath, Monday can’t come soon enough. There’s only one thing that can make the wait a little easier: a cocktail and a cinnamon roll.

I know that sounds like a weird combination, but if you watch the show, you understand it. For those that don’t watch, Saul is currently hiding in Omaha as Gene, the wallflower, who labors away at Cinnabon during the day then goes home to his empty apartment at night. It’s boring and painful, but it’s what Saul has to do if he wants to continue breathing. All that was fine until Jeff found him. Now, he’s back to his old ways of theft and corruption; the kind of actions that go well with a cocktail. While Jimmy’s drink of choice was always tequila, I’m not sure he’s drinking anything since becoming Gene. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t.

When a suspenseful show like Saul comes to a close, a cocktail always helps. Now, I could have used tequila, but I wanted flavors that have been front and center this season: namely the cinnamon roll. Yes, if you watch, you know Jimmy/Saul is laying low at the local Cinnabon. I wanted a drink that would showcase that. And what goes well with a fresh-out-of-the-oven cinnamon roll? Coffee! So, I took those cinnamon flavors I knew I’d find in Rumchata and combined them with some dark, iced coffee. I served it up with warm, cinnamon roll and ended up with one delicious drink. A drink worthy of Jimmy McGil, and one that will definitely get you through the final episode. But sip slowly because I’m sure this is going to be a doozy!
