Red Devil

Last week I did a post on the Rangoon Ruby – a lovely cocktail made with my all time favorite juice – cranberry. I’m such a fan, in fact, last week wasn’t my first post using the popular mixer. I’ve also talked about the Sea Breeze (on more than one occasion, evidently. Oops). Since I’m such a huge fan, I thought I’d bring you another delicious drink that uses the same juice as its base, The Red Devil.

Never heard of it? I bet you have. If you’re a cranberry fan, you’ve probably even tasted it. But you know this cocktail by it’s more recent name, the Cape Codder. That’s right, the Red Devil is the original moniker from 1945, when the grand dame of cranberry juice companies, Ocean Spray, decided to dip their toes in the alcoholic waters. They created the Red Devil as a way to promote their own cranberry juice cocktail, and show the world that cranberries could be used year round instead of just at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The Cape Codder showed up around 1961 after the cranberry crash of the late 50’s and is named after, you guessed it, Cape Cod. While it’s the exact same drink as the Red Devil, the assumption is that the name changed as a nod to Cape Cod, Massachusetts which had a monopoly over the cranberry trade during that time.

But no matter which name you choose to call this lip smacking drink, it’s a perfect choice for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. This drink is super easy to mix up for yourself or guests as it’s only 2 ingredients, it’s cool and refreshing and the cocktail’s red, just like the devil himself. See what I did there? Cheers!

Red Devil

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. vodka
  • 5-1/2 oz. cranberry juice

Directions:

  1. Fill a highball glass with ice. Add the vodka and cranberry juice and stir. Garnish with a wedge of lime and serve.

Disclosure: This is not a sponsored post. Ocean Spray did not provide me with their cranberry juice or ask me to write this. I simply like their juice and use it in all my cranberry cocktails.
