Foghorn Cocktail

It’s been really foggy here the past few weeks. I don’t get it. The last two summers have been hot, beautiful and clear well into October. But for some reason, this year, it’s been chilly and foggy… kinda like it should be in September. It’s weird! And it’s totally throwing me off my game. I mean, I want to keep drinking cool, fizzy cocktails, but then the wind blows and the fog rolls in and all I can think about is something hot and creamy. Well, I’m not ready to turn on the stove just yet. I still want cool, fizzy drinks. There’s good news, though, I found a cocktail that actually fits the weather here: the Foghorn.

As I mentioned, it’s been pretty foggy here as of late. Since I live so close to the beach, the nightly call of the foghorn has been pretty frequent. So, when I found this classic, I knew I had to try it. I mean, what’s better than sipping a Foghorn while listening to an actual foghorn? Okay, there are probably a lot of things that are better than that, but I think it’s pretty cool.close-up

If you’ve never heard of a Foghorn, don’t beat yourself up. I hadn’t heard of it either. But if you’re a Gin & Tonic or Gin Rickey fan, you’ll like this version. Both the Tonic and Rickey have bubbles (which is why I love them). The Foghorn also has bubbles, but while the Tonic and the Rickey’s bubbles come from tonic water and club soda respectively, the Foghorn’s bubbles are from a healthy dose of ginger beer.

I’m a big fan of ginger beer for a couple reasons: you get those wonderful fizzy bubbles, but you also get a strong, spicy flavor thanks in no small part to the ginger. I love ginger in drinks. As a matter of fact, some of my favorites like the Dark N Stormy and of course the infamous Moscow Mule use the fizzy liquid. That ginger beer adds just enough bite to wake up your senses and really enjoy the cocktail. I use ginger beer as often as I can in drinks simply because of that extra kick.

While I have no idea who created the cocktail or when, I’m so happy I discovered it. Now I can ease into autumn, and those foggy evenings won’t be quite so chilly or depressing. I mean, how can you be sad when you have a yummy, fizzy drink in your hand? Here’s hoping that fog and the sound of the foghorn never disappear.

Foghorn

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. gin
  • 1/2 oz. lime juice
  • 4-6 oz. ginger beer

Directions:

  1. Pour the gin and lime juice into a short rocks glass. Add ice and ginger beer to fill. Give a quick stir to combine the flavors and serve.
